Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations Study Group

Because the interest of the Walker School students is in the direction of international politics, their focus will be on collecting information about governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as they relate to infectious disease.

Walker Group #1 (Katie/Shane) will produce a list of agencies/organizations involved in the issue. If students from any school know of an agency or NGO not mentioned by Walker Group 1, please make a comment so your information can be incorporated into the final list. This report will be due Tuesday October 23rd.

The list will then be divided among Walker Groups 2, 3, and 4 so that each can provide a brief analysis of a set of organizations. Each group will explain the goal of organizations to which they are assigned, the resources each has to address its goal, and the obstacles that prevent those goals from being met. Again, comments and observations from the member schools are invited. Group reports must be posted by Monday November 5.

After November 5 and for the following two weeks, the input of the students from St. Albans, GPS, and Christ Church will be very important. We invite you to examine the reports from our groups 2 (Melissa/Spencer), 3 (Jackson/Brendan), and 4 (Grey/Ryan) especially regarding the gap between what the organizations hope to achieve and the obstacles that have prevented them from attaining their goals. The big questions are

1. What can be done to overcome obstacles in the paths of these organizations? What creative solutions exist to do more with less?

2. Can you identify a solution that addresses only the concerns of a particular organization? Can you identify creative solutions that may apply broadly?

If any student from a member school likes a particular proposal, here is an opportunity to say so, adding an explanation of why. If you can find flaws in a proposal, that should also be addressed. A final report will be generated by Walker Group 5 (Helen/Eryn) by December 4th to consolidate the input from this particular posting up to that point. This final report will be posted to the Four School Website: http://www.walkersocialstudies.org/g2020/g2020.htm

When posting, please indicate on the first line your school and your first name (if your first name is not your "screen name."

Grey and I didnt know which organizations we should take from the list..but since we are group 4 we decided to work from the bottom of the list...

FIENS Foundation for Int’l Ed in Neuro Surgery

Objective: As described by there website the organization was founded by a group of leading neurosurgeons to address the critical lack of trained neurosurgeons in the developing world. These neurosurgeons now provide hands-on training and education to neurosurgery wards around the world.

Obstacles: Having a large enough number of certified neurosurgeons that will volunteer and spend large amounts of time abroad. The organization is also troubled with purchasing enough equipment and maintaining a healthy donation population

Each group will explain the goal of organizations to which they are assigned, the resources each has to address its goal, and the obstacles that prevent those goals from being met. Again, comments and observations from the member schools are invited. Group reports must be posted by Monday November 5.

Foundation Human Nature
Huttel Health Center-Ghana

Objective: To educate local citizens to provide local support inhabitants with health center’s as well as support to implement critical projects, which ensure access to fresh water, proper waste management, promotion of gender equality, as well as educational support.

Obstacles: Has a difficult time finding enough volunteers, funding, and experts that are qualified to provide aid and are willing to commit to the service length requirement provided by the organization. With this, the organization also makes individuals pay for transportation and is sometimes characterized as unorganized by those that participate.

General Board Global Ministries

Objective: To provide educational, environmental, food, and other resources will also educating individuals with Christianity in the areas that they serve.

Obstacles: Primary obstacles come in the organizations inability to recruit volunteers that will stay up to 2 years in the African countries they serve in. With this, spreading their particular religious beliefs generally causes problems with the governments in the areas they serve and finding a diverse group of volunteers that can meet all of the obligations of the organization.

Global Outreach International and Outreach Mission

Objective: Similar to the previous organization in that it tries to provide educational, environmental, food, and other resources will also educating individuals with Christianity in the areas that they serve.

Obstacles: Also similar to the other organization in that they struggles to find volunteers willing to dedicate enough time to fulfill the needs of the organization and finding enough donations to fund the resources needed.

Global Relief and Children's Services

Objective: To provide health services to children in various countries across the world.

Obstacles: Finding health staffs that will be able to commit the time, money, and are qualified. Also faces some obstacles with the governments in the area that they provide their services.

Melissa/Spencer

1. Adventist Development and Relief Agency
Goal:
“ADRA seeks to identify and address social injustice and deprivation in developing countries. The agency’s work seeks to improve the quality of life of those in need. ADRA invests in the potential of these individuals through community development initiatives targeting Food Security, Economic Development, Primary Health and Basic Education. ADRA’s emergency management initiatives provide aid to disaster survivors.”
Resources:
The ADRA uses private donations to fund its mission.
Obstacles to goal:
Because of their dependence on private donations the ADRA is limited to how much they can do by their resources. Another challenge to their missions is that they can’t always get to areas that need it the most because of instability, hostile governments, or hazardous conditions.

2. American Baptist Board of International Ministries
Goal:
“The mission of American Baptist International Ministries is to glorify God in all the earth by crossing cultural boundaries to make followers of Jesus Christ.”
Resources:
Their main resources are donations and volunteering from people all over the world.
Obstacles to goal:
If either the donations or volunteering start depleting, the goal will be unsuccessful.

3. American Jewish World Service
Goal:
“American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue justice. AJWS is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality. Through grants to grassroots organizations, volunteer service, advocacy and education, AJWS fosters civil society, sustainable development and human rights for all people, while promoting the values and responsibilities of global citizenship within the Jewish community.”
Resources:
Donations and Volunteering
Obstacles to goal:
If people stop donating or volunteering it will be extremely hard for this service to continue

4. American Refugee Committee
Goal:
“The American Refugee Committee works with refugees, displaced people, and those at risk to help them survive crises and rebuild lives of dignity, health, security and self-sufficiency.”
Resources:
They have fundraisers that help them gain donations and allow more people to hear about the cause. They also rely heavily on volunteering.
Obstacles to goal:
Since they rely so heavily on volunteering and donations, their goal could easily become extinct if people stopped being charitable.

5. Amigos de las Americas
Goal:
“Non-profit organization that provides unparalleled leadership and community service opportunities for young people while concurrently contributing to the well-being of hundreds of communities throughout the Americas.”
Resources:
“Supported by a strong network of Pan-American chapters, high school and college students from diverse backgrounds work successfully with host communities and partner agencies to address health and education priorities.” & donations
Obstacles to goal:
If the donations stopped it would make the goal a lot harder to achieve but since they have such a strong support from their network of Pan-American chapters, it would not completely demolish the goal.
6. Ann Foundation Inc
Goal:
“To provide educational, health and humanitarian services to people with disabilities in less developed countries. To enable those with disabilities to acquire skills through the use of adaptive technologies. To make use of the advancement in technology and computers to educate people with disabilities to empower them to be well informed, productive and self sufficient members of society. To promote and spearhead a continuing concern for the welfare and future of people with disabilities through advocacy, care missions, resource generation and establishment of beneficial programs and projects. To become one of the leading accredited UNV organizations dedicated to working for the welfare and empowerment of people with disabilities. “
Resources:
Volunteering & Donations of items, funds, and vehicles
Obstacles to goal:
Both volunteering and donations are critical for this goal. Without either, it will never be able to get accomplished.

7. Baptist General Conference
Goal:
“Over the past two years we in the Baptist General Conference have prayed and sought God's guidance in setting goals for 2007-2010. Our hope is these goals will unite all of us around one mission that can only be accomplished if we all work together by the power of our Lord Jesus. The goals are:35,245 more disciples - measured by baptisms, 9,788 more leaders - measured by named leaders in training, and 274 more congregations - measured by church planters deployed.”
Resources:
“Multiplication, mobilization, leadership, compassion and generosity [aka: donations and volunteering]”
Obstacles to goal:
The goals are set very high and require A LOT of volunteering (not to mention donations). If they do not have an adequate number of volunteers, they will not be able to reach their goal.

8. Board of World Mission of the Moravian Church
Goal:
“The content and purpose of the mission of the Board of World Mission is best expressed in words taken from the Ground of the Unity, the doctrinal statement of the Moravian Church:
The Lord Jesus Christ calls His Church into being so that it may serve Him on earth until he comes. The Unitas Fratrum (Moravian Church) is, therefore, aware of its being called in faith to serve humanity by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It recognizes this call to be the source of its being and the inspiration of its service. As is the source, so is the aim and end of its being based upon the will of its Lord.”
Resources:
Backed fully by volunteers
Obstacles to goal:
They have to make sure that they keep on recruiting volunteers and don’t lose any or the goal will be completely lost.

The primary objective of the Edward A. Ulzen Memorial Foundation is to provide healthcare and education in the Elimna area. Doctors, nurses, and even dentists work in conjunction to help heal the sick and contribute to educating the public especially adolescents. The education departments of the organization focus mainly on teaching young people how to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. There are also mental health professionals on staff for people who need more than physical rehabilitation. The organization works in conjunction with the local government.

The obstacles that the Edward A. Ulzen Memorial Foundation faces are lack of money, manpower and technology. The Edward A. Ulzen Memorial Foundation is non profit so all employees must be volunteer. It is difficult to find doctors nurses and dentists in Africa who will work for no pay. The organization also does not have the funds to purchase equipment necessary for common medical procedures such a laboratory for disease tests or an x-ray machine.

The objective of the Evangelical Free Church is to spread the word of God as depicted in the bible to people around the world and to provide ministry to people who have never be introduced to the Lord. Currently the Evangelical Free Church in Minneapolis Minnesota has volunteers working in the Congo to spread the word of God and provide health services to its people. They have established a nursing school to teach some of the people there to become nurses so they can continue to help and spread the word of God.

The Obstacles the Evangelical Free Church faces are time, money, and politics. The workers are volunteer and must operate without pay. Because of a language barrier the volunteers have to learn to speak the language. Due to the language situation involvement in the program is long term. It is difficult to find people who are willing to work for free, learn a new language, and work for years abroad at a time. Due to the violence that occurs in the region the operation has had to be put on hold for months at a time.

Very complete list. It might be neat to show how many of these organizations are non government and how many are government.

I think it would be interesting to know a few descriptions of the people each organization primarily helps. For example education level, economic status, etc.
Great job so far!
